EXHAUST CONVERTERS & HOW THEY WORK

[XC90]

Volvo Catalytic Converters - How do they work?

The US has millions of cars and trucks that can create serious air pollution. The biggest problems happen in the largest cities. Clean Air Laws have been passed to limit the amount of pollution a vehicle can produce.
Engines have been modified including their fuel and exhaust systems in an effort to reduce emissions. This led to the development of Catalytic Converters to treat the exhaust gases before they are released into the air.
Modern converters help control the release of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons.
The converter has 2 different compartments. These are the first 2 systems in the process.
The first chamber uses platinum and rhodium to slit apart nitrogen oxide to remove and trap the nitrogen. The second chamber uses oxygen to oxidize (burn) the hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide using a platinum and palladium process.
The third system is the fuel control system. The oxygen comes from adjustments to the air fuel mixture by information relayed from the oxygen sensor located ahead of the converter. The sensor sends the information to the engine computer which can increase or decrease the amount of air in the air fuel mixture.

TheVolvoSite only sells converters that meet EPA standards and we DO NOT sell used Converters
