This could be a very simple fix involving the kickdown cable. This cable runs from the transmission (near the transmission dipstick and filler tube) to the large spool on the driver's side of the car. Two other cables also run to the spool -- one for the throttle, one for the cruise control, I believe.
About four or five inches behind the spool (toward the firewall) is a place where this kickdown cable can be adjusted. Yours is probably a bit too tight. To slacken it, loosen the 13mm nut closest to the front of the car. To start with, loosen it several full turns, then snug up the OTHER adjusting nut (the one closer to the firewall). In so doing, you will have moved the cable end slightly back toward the transmission. The cable should not be slack, just less tight. If this was the problem, this adjustment will cause your transmission to shift sooner.
There's a more precise way to set this cable up properly, but doing this much will prove whether this is likely to solve the problem.
